Sofas are one of the most important parts of every living room because it creates the foundation for comfort and sets the tone for your space. So, it is important that you consider a few design details before investing in a new sofa.
What is Your Style?
Contemporary or modern, traditional or rustic, farmhouse or industrial, transitional or mid-century – you can find living room favourites to suit every style. From delicate pleating and tailored piping on a sophisticated sofa to stainless steel cross base coffee and end tables, you can shop by style that will suit your taste and budget.
What about the Arms?
Sofa arms not only help define the sofa’s style, but they also determine a certain comfort level. Tall arms offer the sofa a more dramatic shape and provide extra support when sitting on the end of the couch or curled up in the corner. Low arms act as a headrest when you’re napping or lounging on your side. Here are a few design terms to know:
Rolled arms: gently sloping rolls that give the sofa a traditional look
Saddle arms: padded arms that look like additional seating
Track arms: straight lines that form an L shape and easily fit in tight spaces
What is Your Colour Theme?
If you're not dedicated to one style, look to colours and finishes to create a cohesive theme for your room. All the different shades of grey are the most current and fashionable neutral. That will create the perfect starting point to add more colours with accent chairs, pillows, wall art and decorative ceramic accents and vases. Then mix ’n match colours and style to create a living room that is uniquely you.
What About Sofa Materials?
Comfort may be the most important factor when choosing the perfect sofa, but you also want to make sure you’re choosing the right material. Some fabrics are more durable than others. We offer a variety of fabric options for our Canadian custom sofas. The Lanzii performance fabric is 100% polyester and gives you the sophisticated style you want with beauty, softness, texture, and the protection you need against spills and life's other messes. Best of all it is kid, pet, and life friendly meaning that it meets and exceeds durability expectations with many remarkable features like minimal shrinkage or stretching, its breathable, it air dries quickly and stains are easily removed with water alone.
Don’t Forget to Measure.
Be sure to measure your room carefully to ensure your new furniture will fit your space easily. Measure the room’s dimensions, including the length, width, and height of the walls. Be sure to also measure the width and height of the doorways leading to the room, since the furniture must fit through them. Rule of thumb is to leave at least 30″ of space between the sofa and other pieces of furniture, and about 16″ of space for a coffee table.
Standard sofa sizes typically range from 72” to 96″ long and 30” to 40″ deep, depending on the style and the manufacturer. Most sofas will comfortably seat three people, but the length of the sofa will also determine who can lay on the couch to watch TV or take a nap.
For smaller spaces, look for items that can work double duty such as a sofa bed to provide a sleep space for guests. A sectional sofa is one that’s made up of two or more furniture pieces such as a loveseat or sofa, corner chair and chaise. With a sectional, sometimes you have the ability to choose a custom configuration that will work even in a smaller condo or townhouse. If you are looking for a sofa that won’t take up much space, consider a sleek loveseat or a pair of armchairs that will fit in your living room. With options available for living rooms of all sizes, you'll easily find small or larger living room sofa choices.
When choosing the perfect sofa for you, function and form are equally important. You want a sofa that makes you happy with the colours, fabrics, and materials you love but you also want the sofa to be durable, comfortable, and affordable.
Finding that balance between function and form is what interior design is all about … and that’s when the fun starts!
